#HotTribe Blog Post 4 Lauren L.

If you visit Melt on a Friday evening or Saturday morning, you will most likely be greeted by Lauren’s smiling face. If it is your first time at Melt, she may give you a personal tour of the studio. Then, she may hand you a towel, mat, or water, at your request. A very detail-oriented person, Lauren folds every mat towel to perfection, wipes the mirrors squeaky clean, and after class, she wipes sweat from the floor…all of this, with a smile. When you see her in action, it becomes clear that she is takes her work/study position at Melt seriously. She is committed to making sure your experience at Melt is a welcoming one…whether it’s your first time or your hundredth in the studio. She is committed to helping others. Above all, she is committed to her yoga practice…on and off her mat.

We agreed to meet on a Friday evening at the studio. Just like the committed, energetic, dependable woman that she is, she was there early. After we gathered around the table in the lobby, she pulled out her thoughtful notes and we began to chat….

Monea:
How did you hear about Melt?

Lauren:
I was actually in Wegman’s (grocery store) in the check-out line. I picked up a yoga magazine and started reading through the benefits of Bikram Yoga. So, I was like, ‘I’m going to give it a shot. I’m going to see where I can do it.’ I put in ‘Hot Yoga 18702’ in a Google search and Melt popped up.

Monea
So when was that?

Lauren:
That was April of 2015.

Monea
Then how long did it take you to actually come to Melt after you found it on-line?

Lauren:
Days (laughter)…my first day here was April 13, 2015.

Monea:

Awesome!!! After your first class, what made you decide to keep coming back?

Lauren:
Honestly, for me it was instant love. Instantly, I loved the sweat, I loved the heat, I loved the energy in the room. I loved the energy in myself. I was just instantly in love with Bikram yoga in particular.
Monea:
That’s amazing. What was your first class and who taught it?

Lauren:
Molly taught it. It was a 9am Bikram class on a Monday morning. From the minute I walked in, Molly was sitting there at the desk and she was super excited. Her energy was awesome and it made me feel awesome. She let me know the cooler areas to hang in the room and to watch the people in the front row. She explained the breathing and everything that was going to go down. I was a little bit nervous at first because of the 105 degrees but I loved it. And I still love it…and I love it…and I love it (chuckles).

Monea:
So inspiring!
How has yoga changed your life? Describe what it used to be like, what happened, and what it is like now.

Lauren:
I think that yoga has changed my entire life. I’m the kind of person where I’m like 0 to 11….like there’s no middle, there’s no number 5….it’s 0-11 and yoga has really given me the ability to just chill out…to just calm my mind, calm my body, calm my soul. I can breathe.

Monea:
Same with me…I call myself a person of extremes…all or nothing, either black or white and yoga helps us live in that gray area.

Lauren:
Exactly.

Monea:
At Melt, we believe, “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.” What pose has challenged and changed you the most, physically, emotionally, and spiritually?

Lauren:
I would have to say standing head to knee pose in Bikram because there are so many little pieces in just that one pose. When I’m moving through it, I’m telling myself in my head on repeat, ‘Lock your knee, put your weight forward, don’t hyperextend your knee,’ because of course I’m a hyper-extender. There’s just so many little pieces that go into that one pose that I just struggle with it. Some days I can nail it and other days I can’t even stand on one foot. One day I will actually get my head to my knee, I will get it there (smile).

Monea:
If someone was intimated by hot yoga, namely the heat, what would you tell them to encourage them to give it a try?

Lauren:
This is funny because I feel that people have a real skewed version of yoga. Friends and co- workers will ask me the craziest things like, ‘What’s that grass that you drink or do you sweat or how hot is it or is it really that hot?’ I tell them we don’t sit around and drink wheat grass (laughter). It is hot, your gonna sweat, but it’s amazing! It’s changed my life, it’s changed other people’s lives. You really just have to put your fears and apprehension aside and just do it. Everybody was in the same boat at some point before trying it. There are so many of us here and we are all here for a reason.

Monea:

I like that…We were all newcomers at one point. We all had to come thru the door….

Lauren:
And that’s the hardest part…getting here and then when you get here you’re like, ‘Oh my God! Why haven’t I done this all along? Where was this my whole life?'(laughter)

Monea:
I’ve noticed how committed you are. How do you cultivate such commitment?

Lauren:
At this point, I love it! If I had a good day, I wanna go to yoga. If I had a bad day, I wanna go to yoga. If I’m tired, I wanna go to yoga. It’s just in me now. It’s a part of my daily life. It’s like brushing my teeth.

Monea:
What do you like most about being a part of the Melt Hot Yoga community?

Lauren:
I just love it! I really love the diversity of it. There are professionals here, students here, athletes here, cross-fitters here. All of these people and we’re all coming together for yoga. We’re all here for yoga! I get the chance to interact with people that I normally wouldn’t get the opportunity to talk to in my daily life…but here we are striking up conversation, we’re laughing, we’re sweating, we’re moving and it’s awesome!
